The majestic Derwentwater with fine views of the surrounding fells, including the fells of Walla Crag (376m) upper-left and Cat Bells (451m) and Maiden Moor (575m) upper-center. This photo was taken from the well-known promontory of Friar's Crag, commanding superb views across the lake with incredible reflections from the fells.

There is a bench here to enjoy the views and take a moment to appreciate just how beautiful the scenery is. Even on grey days when the weather is unpredictable, the ever-changing light and cloud cover can change the view dramatically.

The trees that line the rocky water's edge offer countless photographic opportunities.

The path here loops back on itself and takes a south-easterly direction to come upon an expansive slate/shingle beach leading towards Strandshag Bay and views across to Lord's island, shown center-left.

It can get very busy with walkers at this spot. Many people will walk to Friar's Crag from Keswick just for this view and then walk back again. Others, like myself, will walk around Derwentwater in its entirety. The route is fairly easy with only a few short(ish) sections on the eastern side that runs parallel with the B5289. There are some steep sections here that require a little more concentration, but there is nothing technical. People with some mobility issues may not be able to walk that section. However, its close proximity to the B5289 and a rather handy pavement, means this can be used to reach the next section that drops down to the slate/shingle beach at Ashness Pier in Barrow Bay
