Ashness Gate is one of seven landing stages (jetties) in operation at Derwentwater by the Keswick Launch Co.[1] It is located at Barrow Bay, approximately half way down the eastern side of the lake. The B5289 Borrowdale Road runs next to this section of the lake, the jetty of which can be seen directly from the road. There is small, free car park on a first come first served basis just off the main road opposite the jetty. There are spaces for around ten vehicles. The next nearest parking is provided by the National Trust at Ashness Bridge, and at Great Wood, a 10 and 15 minute walk away respectively.
The shoreline here is shingle/gravel, and suited for picnics and various water activities.
Nearby Ashness Bridge is one of several highly photographed packhorse bridges in the Lake District (another popular one is Slater's Bridge in Little Langdale). It is the perfect to stop, rest, and listen to the water of Barrow Beck as it cascades over the rocks and under the bridge towards Derwentwater. Also nearby is Falcon Crag, Lodore Falls and Barrow House.
The other jetties on the route are: Keswick, Ashness Gate, Lodore, High Brandlehow, Low Brandlehow, Hawes End, and Nichol End.
