The English Lakes:POTM/April-2023

From The English Lakes
View across Elter Water with the prominent Langdale Pikes

It doesn't matter how many times you revisit a place, it can look very different depending on time of day, month or even season of the year. The Lake District is renowned for having four seasons in one day....and the rain! Oh, it can certainly rain a lot, which is why it can look so grey in the winter and so green in the summer. Dark, foreboding clouds in the distance can dramatically change the way a photo looks, just as blue skies and sunny days can too. The previous time I took a photo of Elter Water it was grey, almost colourless and slightly washed out. This did not detract from the natural beauty of the place, but with a little colour associated with the start of spring, the sun making an appearance and clouds moving dramatically across the sky as it casts its distinctive shadows, all makes for an entirely different mood and, ultimately, a very different photo. This time around I used the Slow Shutter Cam software on my iPhone to create a long exposure of a few seconds, which was just enough time to give the water a silky smooth shine and the clouds a sense of movement. Mostly unintentional at the time, a few different captures made the off-the-cuff trip all the more worth it. –Borderman
