Help:How to move a page

The drop-down selector

This article explains how to move a page and what it actually means. Moving a page is basically renaming the main title of that page. This is particularly useful if you made a mistake with the title, for example, a typo or spelling mistake, or if the subject matter has changed and the title is no longer relevant. The process involved is straightforward and can be done in less than 30 seconds.

Step one

  • Click on the More drop down list on the right-hand side next to Read, Edit, View history etc.
  • Click on Move.

Step two

In most cases you won't be moving the page to different namespace. All articles are stored in the Main namespace and all photos are stored in the File namespace.

  • Where your current title is, rename it and double-check it is correct.
  • Add a reason underneath, for example, Fix typo or Spelling mistake fixed.
  • Deselect Leave a redirect behind only if no other pages link to the original page.
  • Deselect Watch source page and target page if you don't want both old and new pages to be in your watchlist.

Step three

  • Click on Move page and you're all done. The page will be "moved" to the new title.

Notes

  • Redirects: These are handy if you know there are other pages that link to the incorrectly titled page. Moving a page will automatically create a redirect on the original page and direct any traffic through to the new page.
  • Watched pages: Every member has a Watchlist. These are pages you are "watching" and can be pages you have created, edited or simply have an interest in. Pages are watched automatically upon creation unless the option is deselected before saving. Pages can also be watched by selecting the star icon in the top right-hand corner next to Read, Edit, View history etc. The watchlist allows you to check if any changes have been made to pages you have created or edited.
  • Moving a page to a new title if it already exists cannot be done. A different title will need to be used.
  • Contact Borderman on his discussion page if you run into any problems.
