Fallen or felled trees with embedded coin offerings or wishes is a widespread sight across the Lake District and other National Parks across the UK, which some authorities believe to be damaging to the environment, especially to the organisms that live in the dead trees. Chemicals are leached over time and can have adverse effects to those organisms. Coins should never be hammered into living trees.
