This template is used for linking to Wikipedia without having to type out the full link, for example: [[w:Derwentwater|Derwentwater]]. Instead, you only need to type out the title once like so: {{w1|Derwentwater}}.
This is fine if the Wikipedia article title is worded how you want it to appear in your text. However this may not be the case. An example of this would be if you want to link to the village of Buttermere (not the lake of the same name), you would type {{w1|Buttermere (village)}}. But, if you wanted the link without the "(village)" suffix, you will have to use Template:W2 and type it very similar to the original method like so: {{w2|Buttermere (Village)|Buttermere}}. In most cases using Template:W1 will suffice.
